About the coffee
Our October coffee of the month comes from the eastern part of Uganda. Until recently, the country wasn't synonymous with high quality coffee and was mostly known for its Robusta production. Things have changed over the past 10 years and it is now making a name for itself in the specialty coffee market. The Coffee Gardens Project was established in 2017. It's goal is to produce incredible speciality coffee in an ethical way, offering a transparent and direct link between coffee farmers and coffee consumers. With many other purposes such as to improve farmer's income and livelihoods, create and provide rural employment, promote gender equality, increase transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain and environmental protection in the area.

The Nabiliwa micro-lot was produced by 88 farmers living on the side of the mountain near The Coffee Gardens washing station in Bukyabo. Many of the farmers, and in particular, most of the women, work at the station to process the coffee cherries that need to be depulped, fermented, washed, dried and sorted before shipping. The contributing farmers have received training by agronomists on agriculture, as well as by experts from Vi Agroforestry, a partner to The Coffee Gardens, on sustainable land management and tree planting.
