It’s no secret we love to carefully blend coffees (our name is a bit of a giveaway). But even we have to admit, many specialty-grade coffees are just so tasty and vibrant that there is no need to mess with these gems.
We’re excited to introduce a new Single Origin: this time it’s sourced from East Africa through our friends at Volcafe.
Grown in the highlands of Bedesa, in Ethiopia’s celebrated Yirgacheffe region, this coffee reflects the area’s remarkable climate, rich soil and incredible coffee heritage. Cultivated at elevations between 2,050 and 2,150 metres above sea level, it develops slowly, helping create a cup that is expressive, floral and full of character.
After harvest, the cherries are purchased locally and processed at a two-hectare dry coffee processing site managed by vertical supplier Abera Teshome. The cherries are carefully sourced from both male and female farmers in the surrounding area and, after sorting and floating, are dried on African raised beds for around 12 to 15 days.
This lot is made up of indigenous heirloom varieties and is processed using the natural method, with no extra fermentation step. Harvest runs from October through to early January, and during this busy period Abera employs around five permanent staff and up to 78 temporary workers. The site also benefits from shade provided by false banana trees (Enset), a traditional agroforestry practice that supports biodiversity and soil health, while also providing a staple local food source used to make Kocho.
Sourced through Ephtah Specialty Coffee, this coffee also tells a bigger story. Ephtah is an Ethiopian exporter focused on producing high-quality specialty coffee through ethical and sustainable practices. Founded and led by Wubit Bekele, a Q-graded cupper with extensive industry experience, the company is committed not only to exceptional coffee, but also to improving the lives of local communities. Ephtah places particular emphasis on empowering women in coffee, providing training, access to finance and leadership opportunities across the sector.
This Ethiopian lot was processed using the natural method, known for producing coffees that are juicy, fruity and sweetly floral. The process begins with handpicking ripe cherries and laying them out to dry in the sun on raised African beds. The cherries are turned regularly to ensure even drying and protected from moisture overnight. Once fully dried, the outer layers are removed, and the beans are graded and prepared for export.
The result is a coffee celebrated for its tropical fruit character, floral aroma and tea-like finish.
We roasted this coffee to let its personality shine. Expect passionfruit up front, lifted by delicate notes of rose and honeysuckle. There’s a lovely sweetness running through the cup, with a silky, honeyed texture and a bright, elegant finish that makes this a joyful filter coffee from start to finish.
It’s a flavour adventure in every sip. Perfect for curious taste buds and bold coffee lovers alike.
